Overview

Surry Hills is an inner suburb immediately south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the City of Sydney local government area. It is bordered by Elizabeth and Chalmers Streets to the west, Cleveland Street to the south, South Dowling Street to the east and Oxford Street to the north. At the 2021 census it had 15,828 residents.

Central station, the largest station on the Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink networks, sits on its western edge, so much of Sydney is a direct train ride away.

Character

Terrace houses and workers' cottages were built here from the 1850s, alongside light industry, and many of these streets survive. Today Crown Street is the main thoroughfare, lined with restaurants, pubs and bars.

  • The Surry Hills Library and Community Centre sits opposite Shannon Reserve and houses a City of Sydney library branch and the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre.
  • Surry Hills Markets are held in Shannon Reserve on the first Saturday of each month.

Getting around

  • Central station (Sydney Trains, NSW TrainLink)
  • CBD and South East Light Rail (Surry Hills stop on Devonshire Street)
  • Buses
  • Central station (Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink) on the western edge of the suburb.
  • CBD and South East Light Rail: a stop on Devonshire Street next to Ward Park, with services to Circular Quay, Randwick and Kingsford.
  • Several bus routes, and the city centre is within walking distance.

Housing

Much of the older housing is 19th-century terrace houses and workers' cottages, built from the 1850s. Rents in the City of Sydney area are above the Greater Sydney median (see the figures below). When you inspect an older terrace, check heating, cooling, damp and natural light.

For families

Space is limited, but there are small parks such as Ward Park and Harmony Park, and Prince Alfred Park with its public swimming pool is on the western edge. Use the NSW School Finder to check catchment schools for a specific address.

Evenings and nightlife

Lively nightlife

Crown Street and the surrounding streets have many restaurants, pubs and bars that are busy in the evenings, especially towards Oxford Street.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Inspect older terraces in person and ask about heating, cooling and damp.
  • Homes on or near Crown Street, with its pubs and bars, can be busy and noisy in the evenings.
  • Rents are above the Greater Sydney median.
