Overview

Parramatta is a city and major commercial centre in Greater Western Sydney, about 24 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD on the banks of the Parramatta River. It is the seat of the City of Parramatta council and is often regarded as one of the main centres of the Greater Sydney region. At the 2021 census the suburb had 30,211 residents.

The Dharug people, who lived in the area before European settlement, named it Baramada or Burramatta. Established by the British in 1788, it is the second-oldest city in Australia.

Character

Since 2000 Parramatta has grown as a government centre, with agencies such as the NSW Police Force headquarters and Sydney Water moving here from the Sydney CBD. Westfield Parramatta is one of Australia's largest shopping centres, and Church Street has many shops and restaurants, with outdoor dining near Lennox Bridge. Old Government House stands in Parramatta Park.
