Overview

Newtown is a suburb of Sydney's inner west, about 4 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD. It straddles two local government areas, the City of Sydney and Inner West Council. At the 2021 census it had 14,690 residents.

The main street, King Street, runs along a ridge from near the University of Sydney towards the south, and Enmore Road branches off it at Newtown Bridge, above Newtown railway station.

Character

King Street and Enmore Road together have more than 600 shopfronts over 9.1 kilometres, and the main shopping strip is described as the longest and most complete late-Victorian and Federation-era commercial precinct in Australia. King Street is known for its cafés, pubs and restaurants of many cultures, with galleries and more cafés in the side streets.

Most of the housing was built in the late 19th century, when farms and estates were subdivided into rows of terrace houses; hundreds remain. There are also pockets of public housing built in the 1960s and 1970s.

Getting around

  • Newtown station (Sydney Trains Inner West lines)
  • Buses along King Street
  • Newtown station is on the Sydney Trains Inner West and Leppington Line and the Inner West and Liverpool Line, which run to the city.
  • Buses follow the old tram routes along King Street and Enmore Road, into the city and out towards Tempe, Dulwich Hill and Canterbury.
  • The University of Sydney is at the northern end of King Street.

Housing

Expect mainly Victorian terrace houses, from small "two-up two-down" cottages to larger rows in streets such as Georgina Street, along with flats and some public housing. Rents in the Inner West council area are close to the Greater Sydney median (see below), while the City of Sydney figure is higher.

For families

Check the catchment school for a specific address with the NSW School Finder. Newtown High School of the Performing Arts is a specialised public performing arts high school in the suburb. If outdoor space matters to you, ask about the garden or courtyard when you inspect a terrace.

Evenings and nightlife

Lively nightlife

King Street and Enmore Road have many restaurants and pubs, and Newtown has a long history as a hub for live music and theatre; residential side streets are quieter.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Homes on King Street and Enmore Road can be noisy; side streets are usually quieter.
  • Terraces are often small; check storage, laundry and outdoor space when you inspect.
  • Check which council area (City of Sydney or Inner West) an address is in, as local services such as waste collection differ.
