Overview

Manly is a beachside suburb of northern Sydney, 17 kilometres north-east of the Sydney CBD, and one of the administrative centres of Northern Beaches Council. Sydney Harbour lies on its western side, and the Pacific Ocean and Manly Beach about 300 metres to the east. At the 2021 census it had 16,296 residents; 55.2% were born in Australia, and the next most common countries of birth were England, New Zealand, the United States, Brazil and South Africa.

Character

Manly was one of Australia's most popular seaside resorts in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its commercial centre is the Corso, which runs from Manly Wharf on the harbour side to Manly Beach on the ocean side; part of it is a pedestrian mall with outdoor dining. The harbour side has calm water, a swimming area and sailing and yacht clubs, and Manly Life Saving Club is one of Australia's oldest surf clubs.

Getting around

  • Manly ferry to Circular Quay (Opal)
  • Manly Fast Ferry (private)
  • Buses to the city and other suburbs
  • Manly ferry from Manly Wharf to Circular Quay takes about 20 minutes and is part of the Opal network; a privately run fast ferry also operates.
  • Buses run to the city and other suburbs.

Housing

Rents in the Northern Beaches council area were above the Greater Sydney median in April–June 2026 (see below). Check how far a home is from the wharf or a bus stop if you will commute to the city.

For families

Manly has both harbour and ocean beaches. Always swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches. Use the NSW School Finder to check catchment schools for a specific address.

Evenings and nightlife

Mixed evenings

The Corso and the streets around it have cafés and restaurants with outdoor dining; residential streets away from the centre are quieter.

Worth knowing before you move

Honest trade-offs newcomers mention. They are not reasons to avoid a place.

  • Commuting to the CBD depends on the ferry or buses; check the timetable for your working hours.
  • Rents are above the Greater Sydney median.
